July 22: New Britain 7, Reading 6

Jake Blalock
3-run HR

New Britain, CT--In a season of frustrating losses for the Reading Phillies, Tuesday afternoon's Eastern League defeat at New Britain Stadium may take the grand prize. The Phillies went from thinking they had tied the game to suffering a 7-6 loss to the New Britain Rock Cats when plate umpire Mark Buchanon upheld the Rock Cats' appeal that Lou Marson left third base early on a fly ball to right field.

Reading (41-61) entered the ninth trailing 7-5. Greg Golson walked with one out and advanced to second on Marson's infield single. Jeremy Slayden's single scored Golson to make it 7-6 and Marson went to third. Neil Sellers hit a fly ball to shallow right. Matt Moses made a great diving catch for the second out. His throw to first to try and double Slayden was late and Marson crossed the plate with the apparent tying run. But New Britain (42-60) appealed to third and Buchanon called Marson out to end the game.

The Rock Cats took a 1-0 lead in the third on a solo homer by Drew Butera, his sixth of the season.

The Phillies came roaring back in the fourth. Jake Blalock slammed a three-run homer of the scoreboard in left and Jason Donald and Golson hit back-to-back two-out doubles to make it 4-1.

With the Phillies leading 5-2 in the sixth, the Rock Cats rallied to tie on a sacrifice fly, an RBI double by Brock Peterson and a run-scoring single by Toby Gardenhire.

New Britain went ahead in the seventh on a two-run homer by Felix Molina, his second of the year.

Armando Gabino (5-4) allowed one run in 3-1/3 innings to get the win. Patrick Overholt (3-6) allowed Molina's homer and took the loss. Ben Julianel picked up his 21st save.
