Zagurski rejoins R-Phils

Reading, PA –
The Philadelphia Phillies have activated LHP Mike Zagurski from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Reading.

Zagurski missed all of 2008 to recover from right hamstring surgery and left elbow surgery.  He had been on the DL, due to the elbow injury, since March 21, 2008.

Zagurski made three appearances, two starts, for Class-A Clearwater on Major League rehab assignment from April 17-24.  He was 0-0 in 3.0 IP, allowed 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB with a SO.

He began the 2007 season with Clearwater and earned a promotion to Reading after going 0-0 with a 1.29 ERA in 12 relief appearances (16.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 30 SO).

In six games with Reading he was also 0-0 and had a 1.29 ERA (7.0 IP, 2 H, R, ER, 2 BB, 8 SO).

He was called up to the big leagues from Reading when the Phillies purchased his contract on May 25, 2007.  He made his Major League debut the same day at Atlanta.  He appeared in 25 games for the Philadelphia and went 1-0 with a 5.91 ERA (21.1 IP, 25 H, 14 R, 14 ER, 11 B, 21 SO).

He was optioned to Triple-A Ottawa on July 27, 2007 and pitched in seven games (0-0, 2.00 ERA, 7 G, 9.0 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 6 BB, 11 SO) before being recalled by Philadelphia on August 15, 2007.  He suffered the hamstring injury in his second back with the big club on August 18 and was placed on the DL the following day.

Zagurski won the Paul Owens as the best pitcher in the Phillies Minor League system in 2007 when he went 0-0 with a 1.39 ERA (5 ER in 32.1 IP) in 25 games between Clearwater, Reading and Ottawa.  He averaged 13.6 SO/9.0 IP without allowing a HR.

Zagurski is on the Phillies 40-man roster. The R-Phils active roster is now full at 24 players. Reading had been playing short handed.
